This theoretical-practical workshop explores the perceptual, artistic, and gastronomic dimensions of cultivating shiitake mushrooms on oak logs—a method rooted in centuries-old traditions from Southeast Asia.
Using an open-source hardware device that captures and translates the fungi’s bioelectrical signals, participants will install electrodes and contact microphones onto the cultivation logs to record and customize the soundscapes generated by the mushrooms’ activity.
The workshop culminates in the creation of "garden-devices"—site-specific installations at Escola Massana—that explore interspecies communication and symbiotic relationships through sound.
As part of the Tilling Roots and Seeds research residency, this session opens space to reflect on the future of sustainable agriculture and food systems through creative, multispecies engagement.
