How can microalgae like Spirulina become part of our everyday lives as a sustainable food source? In this hands-on workshop, artist Fara Peluso invites participants to explore this question through speculative design, DIY biology.

Synthesis is the participatory arm of Peluso's ongoing research into Spirulina cultivation.

The session will also include a special presentation by the ALÍCIA Foundation, who will share their work at the intersection of food, health, and innovation—providing a broader context for how initiatives like Spirulina cultivation fit into larger conversations around nutrition, mental well-being, and sustainable food systems.

Key topics include:

· How Spirulina supports mental and physical health through its high levels of vitamins and serotonin-related proteins

· Home cultivation

· Rethinking our food habits, living spaces, and personal agency through speculative design

· How collective care practices can drive social and environmental empowerment

By combining art, science, design, and critical thinking, Synthesis challenges participants to rethink not just what we eat, but how we live. Don't miss this unique opportunity to engage with speculative futures and hands-on innovation.

Part of Fara Peluso’s Production Grant research for Tilling Roots and Seeds , this workshop focuses on capacity building through hands-on exploration of sustainable practices.
