REFLECTIONS ON ART AND SCIENCE THROUGH A WOMAN’S PERSPECTIVES

Art and science are fields that have always been thought of as the complete opposite. However, research strategies in science and art have many more similarities than we believe. Scientific research implies rationality, but also imagination and chance. On the other hand, artistic creation has a remarkable reflexive and discursive component which integrates a field of thought with science. The role of women in science and art has been relevant, but for different reasons, it has not had the same voice and echo as in the case of men.

The debate Reflections on Art and Science through a Woman’s Perspective invites the artist Anna Rierola, the scientist Neus Prats and the bioart specialist Daniel López del Rincón, to explain how science and art are compatible and what is the importance of the work that women do in these two fields, not only for the dissemination of science and art, but also to highlight the value of interdisciplinary work. The activity seeks to contribute to minimising gender imbalances, promoting equal opportunities and proposes to think of art as a way of approaching the field of science.

The debate is organised by the Biomedical Research Institute (IRB Barcelona) and the Quo Artis Foundation and it is organised in the framework of the Festa de la Ciència 2019.

Participants

Daniel López del Rincón is a doctor in Art History and professor at the University of Barcelona. His research and teaching focuses on the art of the twentieth and twenty-first centuries and particularly, on the analysis of the relationship between art, nature and science. He is the author, among others, of the book Bioarte. Arte y vida en la era de la biotecnología (Akal, 2015), editor of  Naturalezas Mutantes. Del Bosco al bioarte (Sans Soleil, 2017) and the curator of multiple exhibitions such as Postnature. The Future is Present, in the festival Ars Electronica in Linz, (Austria), in its 2019 edition.

Anna Rierola is a visual artist interested in science as a way to reflect on the world as an interconnected network. Her work is based on scientific images, obtained thanks to her close collaboration with leading research centers. Rierola was the first resident artist at the Institute of Biomedical Research (IRB Barcelona) and the resulting work from her residency will be presented by Quo Artist in the Sant Pau Art Nouveau Site in Mach 2020. In February, she finalised Bosque ancestral, a permanent public work that can be visited at the Institute of Marine Sciences, and is currently working on a project on symbiosis. Previously, she has exhibited her work in Pirelli Hangar Bicocca (Milan).

Neus Prats Costa is an Experimental Pathologist. She is also a Veterinary Doctor from the Autonomous University of Barcelona (UAB) and graduated from European Colleges of Veterinary Pathology and Laboratory Animal Medicine. Currently, she is in charge of the Histopathology Platform of the Biomedicine Research Institute of Barcelona (IRB Barcelona). Previously, she was an associate professor at the Faculty of Veterinary of the Autonomous University of Barcelona (UAB) and Head of Pathology and predictive Toxicology at the pharmaceutical company Almirante S.A. Currently she is the President of the Committee for Equality and Diversity, and ambassador of the program  Artist in Residence of IRB Barcelona.
